Locher Tract (0.7 mile) offers many opportunities for the nature lover. For the traveler who doesn't have much time, there is a short walking trail that follows the James River, loops up past the beaver pond, and heads back along a shady wooded path. With lovely grassy areas, there are some great spots to picnic (bring a blanket!), fly a kite, or have a game of catch. Vault toilets are available at the trailhead. From Va. 130 turn south onto Va. 759 for 0.9 mile, turn left onto Va. 782, continue straight onto gravel road (FS 3093) to parking area at end of road. This Forest Service brochure also includes other hiking trails in the area. |

Mountain Biking Mountain bikes are allowed on any forest road or trail unless it is specifically closed to mountain bike use. The closed routes are very few and are well signed. Expect to carry and walk your bike for considerable distances. Trails are narrow and sometimes steep and are always pretty rough due to rock. Expect to share the forest with other users, including hikers, horsefolk, timber cutters, hunters, and bird watchers. |
